The Solent Music Project is a jointly owned and managed resource provided by Portsmouth, Southampton and the Isle of Wight Local Authorities.The Solent Music Project consists of several 'world music' educational resources that are made available to all LA schools within the three authorities. These resources include instruments and curriculum material that enable pupils to study and experience playing instruments from various parts of the world. Launched in September 2000, the SMP provides teachers with sufficient instruments for a class of up to thirty children, information on the cultural background of each resource and schemes of work based on the new music curriculum. It also provides a video of effective practice and a CD of the rhythms and tunes used in the schemes of work. Newsletters are sent to all schools on a regular basis with information and updates.
