In Box / Out BoxThis year our cross arts weekend took the theme of inside and outside, inspired by writer Philip Gross and artist Zelie Gross. Nearly all the activities either involved both art and writing or led to one which did. The art included a range of practical, physical and visual activities designed to stimulate creative response and to encourage the use of all the senses for observing and responding in writing. A rich mix of ideas and a brilliant variety of materials sourced by Zelie were provided. Throughout the weekend we tried to balance the inner space which we need for imagination and reflection, with the 'outward' pleasures of work in the gardens and collaboration in a group. The idea of inside and outside was matched by an absorbing practical activity: the making of boxes. After learning to make an origami box, the students used their boxes to hold poems, drawings and objects they collected in the garden. They also experimented with fragments of thought which were combined in new ways on the faces of the boxes.
